As we discuss the ethical implications of the Sears site and how hard it is
to watch someone admired do something so contrary to the WHO code and as the
waves pull us in and out, I have had some small successes this month. I had
asked my sister to make a quilt for World Breastfeeding Week and it didn't
get finished in time, so I had it for Christmas. It is handquilted and
heirloom quality, I called in all my sister points. We raffled it off to
women breastfeeding a child of twelve months or more and had a lot of
entries. The woman who won is breastfeeding a child who is 23 months. The
entries ranged from 13 months to 5 years. The local paper ran an article
with a picture of my sister and the quilt and didn't edit my release which
used Kathy Dettwiler's ages for normal breastfeeding. Today the local
collaborative wrote me a check for a pump for a breastfeeding mother of a
two month old who is returning to work, she had spent all her funds on the
turquoise and white model and had been completely depressed about how
pumping was going. I was able to get her a hand pump until she gets the
double electric tomorrow. And when I was out buying a sandwich for lunch,
my contact with the Kiwanees told me that the money I had asked for as seed
money for a breastfeeding workshop had passed the first hurdle and was
headed for the budget committee. All of these things plus the babies and
the mothers keep me going.
This list has been an inspiration and a learning experience for me, spurred
me on to get certified and to keep learning.
Thank you for all your expertise.
