Hi, there. First post - please be patient if I goof. Diane Wiessinger was
wondering about terminology for the "chin first, pry-mouth, mountain-climb"
latch technique - how about: the "Asymmetric" latch? The August-September
2000 edition of the LLLI Leader publication "LEAVEN" has an excellent
article titled "The Mother-Baby Dance: Positioning and Latch-on" that
describes this technique (and others) in a simple and concise format.
"LEAVEN" is for LLLI Leaders only, but you may be able to otbain a copy by
contacting LLLI. The article was written by Andrea Eastman LLLL, IBCLC -
I'm not sure if Ms. Eastman coined the "Asymmetric Latch" term herself or if
came from another source, but I think it is a great term for our intents and
purposes. I myself have used this latch on technique but never really
suggested it to mothers as I thought I was doing my own thing - now that
there is an official term for it, and an easy way to describe it, I find I
am suggesting it a lot. Perhaps the lactation profession could adopt this
term across the board.
