I agree, I hate the "Pass the baby with the bottle around the room so everybody gets a try." method of infant feeding in front of a crowd.

I do not give clients info such as "what formula is closest to breastmilk?" (Probably the most common formula question I get.) I give a brief overview at the differences between ABM and human milk, let them know that powdered formulea is NOT sterile and then tell them, if they really want to use ABM to ask their doctor which brand to use, knowing the doctor may well simply prescribe whatever he has in his office or who contacts him the most often.

I also introduce alternative feeding methods, such as cup, spoon, SNS and simply don't use "paced feeding" in my practice, because it implies "babies can learn to breastfeed from bottle feeding" which is what I have heard from most women who have been introduced to paced feeding and were to freaked out, as new moms, to understand the subtle nuances of "Paced feeding" and simply think it's going to teach a baby to nurse.

I also mention it's a good idea NOT to have any ABM in the house at all and explain why, and also let Mom know that both Jewel and Walgreens are open ALL NIGHT if there were an emergency requiring ABM.
