I understand and support the concern Lisa's pediatricians express regarding
the VLBW prem being exposed to CMV. I'm sorry though that they aren't
equally concerned about the greatly increased risk of septicaemia from
other causes, NEC and growth and developmental problems which all occur
with feeding formula to VLBW infants.
Why is it that infection in the infant caused by the mother's milk is an
absolute taboo - but morbidity and mortality caused by infant formula is an
acceptable risk?
Getting a solution to pasteurising the mother's own milk must be a priority.
The British Lactnetters were talking about a simple, effective,
inexpensive, individual pasteurization system some months ago. I wonder
how the development of that is progressing? But even without that, the
amount of money saved by preventing one case of NEC would probably pay for
a hospital-grade pasteurisation system anyway.
