I am participating in a one day conference on June 7 on women's health
and Jewish law. I am the women's health part for the session on
"Fourth Trimester: Childbirth, nursing and contraception.'"
If anyone has some basic info on post partum depression and
contraception and breastfeeding (both bf as contraceptives and effects
of other contraceptives on bf and milk supply) Any sources for public
domain handouts and some basic info for me and my co-presenter would
be most appreciated.

~~ Sounds like a good event, Naomi. One thing this reminded me of: when I
used to do LLL meeting in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood here in Brooklyn,
we would talk about how normal tenure nursing is the way to help families
space their children according to Design. With some mothers feeling a
pressure to have a lot of children, they felt they should wean or not nurse so
they could have more. We talked about how this is a form of manipulating
fertility just as artificial and inapproriate ( for these moms and their
values) as taking contraception to artificially interfere with conception. One
mom used to say "I had my 8 children, I just had them in 20 years instead
of 10 and it's much better." This modeling was great. In this community the
word "contraception" was not used, unless it referred to a situation where
for medical/other reasons there was a reason and acceptance of not having
another child. The focus was on health child spacing. LAM may be something
mothers want to learn about since it is not at all the same as "the rhythm
method." Here are some links.: _LLLI | The lactational amenorrhea method_
(http://www.llli.org/ba/Aug93.html)
_http://www.fhi.org/training/en/modules/LAM/pdfs/lam_factsheet.pdf_
(http://www.fhi.org/training/en/modules/LAM/pdfs/lam_factsheet.pdf) Both of these
are written by Dr. Miriam Labbok, who is a great lady and the LAM expert.

Peace,
Judy
