Hi, All: I, too, have experienced the wonders of cabbage. Does anyone out
there, particularly some of you from one of the Asian countries, know if
you get the same effect from using bok choy? I recently worked with a
couple who moved here from Korea just a short time ago. I mostly spoke
with the dad as he was more proficient in English than his wife. Nursing
was going beautifully for them here in the hospital, but once they got
home, mom got painfully engorged. Dad told me (over the phone) that he had
heard that cabbage leaves helped with engorgement, but all they had in the
house was bok choy. So he chopped some up (think cole slaw here) and had
her stuff handfuls in her bra. He did say that they felt it helped
somewhat, but I'm wondering if the same chemicals are present in bok choy
as in green cabbage - I believe both are members of the same plant family,
but not real up on my botany this early in the AM. It took him several
minutes of starts and hesitations, but he finally did blurt out his last
question - was it OK if he sucked on his wife's nipples when she got so
engorged that the baby couldn't latch? He said that seemed to be more
effective than the pump in softening her nipples. Both of them were so
eager to get breastfeeding right! What a lovely couple - I really enjoyed
my conversations with him.
