Debbi, I appreciate your trying to find a solution (we are all kind of brain
storming at this point in the game) but, I really don't think "just" going to BRU
and asking them to put stickers on their pumps, referring them to any of US is
something they care about doing. If that were a possibility, the first woman I
spoke to at BRU, the day I saw the Symphony, had NO interest in what I had
to discuss with her, nicely, about how this was being done, would have been
more responsive. She didn't care, neither does BRU.

I think too many, even of our own, think this is not a huge problem or can be
solved by "JUST" talking to Medela or Babies R Us. If that were the case, it
would be the issue that it IS. "Why not" ask BRU to just put stickers with our
name, phone on THEIR pumps? First of all, BRU doesn't care enough to
educate it's employees on the use of the pumps, the storage of milk etc. What
motivation would BRU have, to do this? It was bad enough when they started
selling PNS, and basically wanted the LCs in the area to pick up the slack
by "training" the women who bought the product from BRU, but then called US
to try to figure out how to use it. (I had to institute a "Pump Lesson Fee" for
people who did this, making it clear that if the PNS was brought from an LC,
the "lesson" would be part of the purchase price.)

Second of all, even if BRU would do this (And I doubt they would) although a
few woman might call, these are probably the same women who would call an
LC or LLL with questions anyway. AND, those of us who actually have to
support our families with our Lactation Work, and still do huge amounts of
volunteer work, see Pro Bono Clients, rent Grand Pumps etc, this is yet several
more hours per week answering questions from BRU customers, taken from our
children and families, with no remuneration or even thanks for our families or
ourselves.

So, I'm HELPING a system I don't believe in, or don't think is safe, and know is
probably harming more women than it "helps" knowing the moms who need the
help the MOST are probably the LEAST likely to call, and not only answering
questions. but knowing that BRU is making a PROFIT on my education,
experience, talent and hard work, but losing revenue, while HELPING BRU make
MORE money that they don't need, while I WORK FOR Babies R Us FOR FREE?

No, a pharmacy at least has an idea of who to refer to (at least the ones in
my area do) BRU is not in anyway staffed by any sort of health care provider.
BRU isn't the same thing as a pharmacy. And, it wouldn't work, nor would it be,
IMO, ethical to HELP this broken, dangerous, poorly thought out system to
thrive.

No, the solution is to NOT allow Big Box Chain stores to rent breast pumps,
when they do not value breastfeeding, know nothing about Human Milk, bother
to employ Lactation Consultants, nor care a whit about the women who all
they want from is their credit card number.

Mary
