If I were to read between the lines, I would venture to guess mom is
suffering some PPD and maybe getting rather severe. Maybe you could suggest she
talk to her OB, or perhaps you could do a basic screening (the Edinburg
Postnatal Depression Scale is a very good one-link to follow)

with mom to see if she needs further assistance. She may very well reaching
out for help, just doesn't know the right words to use, or feel embarrassed
to admit being a mom isn't as "natural" as she expected it to be.
