Dear Karen:

You said this baby weighed 5 lbs, 8 oz. at 38 weeks. That's a bit small.
From your description, I wonder if there was any trauma to this baby in
utero? E.G., was it a botched abortion? Was it a planned pregnancy? Did
the mom have unusual amount of stress? Violence in the home? Was it a
multiple pregnancy that turned into a single pregnancy? Were there any
complications/medications given during the pregnancy? Were there any
problems immediately following the birth? Vigorous suctioning?
Separation from mom? Any of these things could explain this baby's
apparent lack of will to live. Has anyone looked carefully at the bubble
palate? Is it painful for her to swallow? Does she have adequate air
flow through her nostrils when eating? Has she been seen by a speech
language pathologist to rule out a swallowing disorder?

I know a lot of these questions were probably already asked, but it's
important to see the whole picture when there doesn't seem to be a
physical reason for not eating.
