Dear Elizabeth,
I would like to say I think the fact that you even think it may be
possible to breastfeed triplets is wonderful!! You are correct, every
situation is different. Many triplets (most, really) are born
prematurely and that means their breastfeeding abilities will
probably not be the same as a fullterm baby's for a little while. If
all 3 are healthy and being fed "by mouth", it is ideal if they do not
get any bottles but instead are fed by cup or another alternate
feeding method while needing supplements. This may take an extremely
dedicated mother. It is very typical for 35 week babies to nurse "well"
only a few times a day and so may need to be supplemented at first.
Because this mother is pumping as well as putting the babies to breast
they will not need formula for long! One of her biggest stumbling
blocks may be the belief of those around her that she can't do it. She
will need all the help and encouragement she can get. Helping to
arrange for help once she is home with the babies is essential to ensure
her success. I am sure your encouragement and positive attitude meant
alot to her. Where I work I commonly encounter negative attitudes from
health care professionals about breastfeeding twins, never mind
triplets. Keep up the support!
