I re-took The Exam last year and I've been teaching an exam review course
for 10 years. Here are some helpful hints:

1. It's an entry-level exam. If you're TRYING to keep up to date, you've
read the textbooks and some journals, and you're familiar with the IBCLC
Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, and you exercise critical
thinking, you should do fine. You work with this material every day. The
fact that you're reading Lactnet puts you way ahead of the crowd.
2. Look for the most obvious answer or most obvious feature of a picture. If
you find yourself thinking "but what if..." then you're probably reading too
much into the question. (This can be a problem for both new and "veteran"
LCs.)
3. Read the stem carefully and thoroughly before you pick an answer.
4. Your first response, even if it's a guess, is almost always correct. Do
NOT change an answer unless you are sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that
the first answer was wrong.
5. Each question will test only ONE concept, even though real clients have
multiple aspects. A given question will either be a pathology question, a
legal-ethics question, anatomy, etc. It may help to review the Exam
Blueprint categories.
6. It's OK to miss a few questions. Nobody has ever scored 100%. The passing
score is usually around 65% - you can miss almost one out of three questions
and still pass.
7. The concepts and facts that occur most frequently and are the most
critical to breastfeeding success will show up more than the unusual stuff.
This exam isn't trying to get you to memorize esoteric trivia.
8. Most people are NOT helped by cramming at the last minute. Don't open
your books next weekend - go to the beach, play with your kids or
grandchildren, go to the movies and see a new funny movie, etc. Or, enjoy
the ILCA conference!
9. Follow your daily habits on the day of the exam as closely as possible.
10. People all over the world will be taking the test, and the security
measures protect all of us. Keep the exam questions confidential. You may be
tempted to talk about a specific question afterward, but please don't.

Good luck to all test-takers, new and not-so-new!
