I've been watching a new daily show on cable TV here in Canada - "The Mom
Show" on Life Network. If you get the Life Network, I think the show is
aired
several times during the day, so other than the morning (after "Martha") you
can also catch it in the afternoon.

I was completely prepared to hate it - a la "The View"

I've been quite surprised to see them openly discuss co-sleeping, wearing
babies, breastfeeding - all as normal and expected. One segment on fitting
bras showed 2 moms - one was breastfeeding, so they fitted a nursing bra.

These women are not "crunchy" - some segments still talk about fashions for
babies, how to buy a crib, etc. To me, its a typically "Canadian" show -
some consumerism, but also pretty touchy feeling, and humourous. I suppose
it is targetting the 50% of Canadian women (those with full time jobs, so
often these are educated etc) that qualify for our one-year maternity
leaves, and have time on their hands for that year (and disposable income, I
suppose)

Recently they did a segment on visiting the dentist. I wasn't really
listening that hard, but I did catch the dentist say that if you are going
to be breastfeeding for a long time, you should rinse out the child's mouth
with water after they nurse but before they go to sleep.

After the taped segment ended, and the one of the hosts said:
"Dentist - "get off the gas!" you can't rinse out the mouth of a breastfed
baby - they're asleep! it isn't going to happen!"
The other host said that if she has to choose between waking a sleeping
breastfed baby or risking cavites - it'll be risk the cavities every time!"

Today they are scheduled to discuss the myths of breastfeeding - they
started with an opening dialogue between the 2 hosts, about mastitis. It
was quite humourous, with one host telling about asking her husband to "help
her out" by getting that clog moving! They talked about moving the babies
position, when they felt a plugged duct coming on. Overall I thought it a
very accurate representation of what breastfeeding is like for today's mom
in Canada. Done with humour and celebration, not with bitterness or
complaints.

Both of these moms breastfed, and they constantly are mentioning nursing or
breastfeeding, wet spots on shirts, co-sleeping etc. They aren't really
"pushing" it - its just stated as normal. There have been moms bottle
feeding, but there's also been lots of guest moms ("regular" moms that
attend
each day and join the discussion) that have sat there and nursed right
through the segments and discussions.

Janice Reynolds
just thought I'd mention it if other Cdn moms would like to watch.
