Dear Friends:

About 30 years ago, pregnant women were encouraged to express pregnancy milk
as a preparation for breastfeeding.( I chose not to do it because it was not
attractive to me.) There is at least one article published about this.

A few years ago, there were several articles published in Breastfeeding
Review about antenatal expression of human milk. One was by Sue Cox, the
other was by a mother with a chronic autoimmune disease. Mothers suffering
with chronic diseases that can be triggered by formula, want their babies to
receive nothing but human milk to minimize risk. As their babies have a good
chance of being supplemented after delivery, it is clever and appropriate to
have a supply of first milk on hand for that supplementation.

There is a pilot project going on in the UK (? I believe) that did
cardiotocographic monitoring of the baby while 43 pregnant mothers with
diabetes were hand expressing. There were never changes of any concern in
infant heart beat patterns.

This makes sense. Most pregnant women have sex; the only ones advised to
abstain from orgasm are the ones at risk for preterm labor.

If oxytocin release from nipple stimulation would start labor, wouldn't life
be much cheaper and easier? Wouldn't babies be falling out all over the
place?

warmly,
