Ann, thanks for the reference, which I will certainly track down for myself.

Having not yet read the article, I will state that I hope the writer divides
it up into the various sects and subcultures. India is a VERY LARGE
COUNTRY. To talk about "Traditional Practices of Women from
India" is about like saying the traditional practices of women of Africa,
or of Latin America, or of the American Indian Cultures.

I work with 5 Indian women, from three different
states of India, and three different religions. The practices they grew
up with are quite different from one another. And sometimes they
are as confused by our East Indian patients' practices as the rest of
us are.

Sincerely, Chanita

Subject: Indian culture

A few weeks ago someone posted a note requesting information on Indian
cultures. I also was interested in this and feel I could be more
understanding of women from India if I knew more. I was not very pleased
with my e-mail from Dr.Nair and I will send him a note.
What I did find was a very good article that I recommend to this group to
look up.
" Traditional Practices of Women From India: Pregnancy, Childbirth, and
Newborn Care " Ushvendra Kaur Choudhry, RN, PhD. JOGNN. Sept/Oct 1997, Vol
26, No 5, 533-539.
I also plan to seek out a Pediatrician I know who is from India and ask her
some questions.
Hope this is helpful to some.
