Please, let's gather 'a PR kit.' I was very frustrated
last fall trying to gather a presence of breastfeeding
awareness info for display at the Susan Komen Race for
the Cure in Portland, OR. They offer a health fair the
day before the race, but the booth cost was
prohibitive for our non profit organization. In my
opinion, breastfeeding information should be a part of
these public breast cancer prevention events.

I look forward to follow up on this idea.

<<I want to make a proposal to this group....
If everyone were to contact their local cancer society
and ask them to
discuss with you the benefits of breastfeeding and
breast cancer (and
be
persistent) then we could work on them to pressure the
national level
to look
more at the research.

In other countries, I am not aware if there are
national societies for
cancer
but if there is to do the same.

Each one of us can make a difference.>>

Here's my first reaction.

Ann,
That is a great idea. It could be a project for state
and local
breastfeeding
coalitions. You know what would make it easier? A kit.

This wouldn't need to be much:
1. a little write-up of your story---basically what
you sent Lactnet,
but
with more details.
2. a bibliography of the most compelling
articles--just a half-dozen of
them.
If the bibliography could be annotated by one of our
Lactnet physicians
or
public health people, it would be even better.
3. information on the target, in this case, American
Cancer
Society--this is
probably available on a website. People should know a
bit about the
structure, activities and funding of the organization
and what sort of
approach is likely to work best.
4. Anything else that would be useful for someone who
is taking on the
project--handouts to give the people at ACS about bf
as a risk reducer
for
breast and ovarian cancer, for instance.

Wouldn't this be a good project for a student in
health care or health
promotion or communications to take on? Research the
topic; put
together the
kit; contact the coalitions; and serve as a
coordinator for people to
share
their stories. What do the teachers and students on
the list think
about
this idea?
