The speaker at the American Dietetics Association annual convention who
was touting the addition of ARA and DHA to infant formulas was Joan
Younger Meek, MD, MS, RD, FAAP, IBCLC. She is the editor-in-chief of
the American Academy of Pediatric's "New Mother's Guide to
Breastfeeding". She is director of General Academic Pediatrics at
Orlando Regional Healthcare in Orlando, Florida. She currently serves
on the board of the International Board of Lactation Consultant
Examiners. She states in her notes that supplementation of formula with
DHA and ARA enhances tissue levels and has been recommended by WHO and
other expert groups. Also that for premature infants outcomes of
supplementation include improved visual acuity, better Bayley scores of
infant development, and improved growth in weight and length, with a
reference to (Innis et al: Journal of Pediatrics 2002; 140:547-554). Do
any of you have any thoughts on this?
