As Tom Hale stated ciprofloxacin has been shown to
cause arthropathy in beagle puppies. It has been given to
children with cystic fibrosis and follow up studies of these
children show no harmful effects.
I posed the question of cipro use while BF to a ped ID
specailist once and he stated his advice would be to have
mom temporally wean. I asked how he could advise
weaning when ciprofloxacin hasnt been shown to have
adverse effects on human children but abm has. He didnt have
a good answer. This is a situation of giving mom
informed consent. Personally I'd lean toward continuing
BF.
Ive given ciprofloxacin to two children in my practice, one with
CF and one with urinary tract "hardware" and a UTI cause
by pseudomonas. I dont give it to beagle puppies.
As has been pionted out its a very effectice urinary tract drug
but not without alternatives. Its main strong point is as an
oral antibiotic for pseudomonas.
