What I find fascinating about this news that the AAP is endorsing the Ten Steps is the following from their letter about it:

<<The AAP endorsement of this document is especially important because of our recent experience with the new AAP Breastfeeding Residency Curriculum. Through testing this curriculum it became evident that in order for residents to effectively learn about the care of breastfeeding families they need to be taught in a breastfeeding supportive environment. Ensuring that the Ten Steps are in place is a vital step towards creating this atmosphere for our future pediatricians.>>

In other, less tactful, words: they tried out their breastfeeding curriculum and found out that it won't work in the typical American hospital (their residents can't "effectively learn about...breastfeeding..."). The point of a curriculum is to enable effective teaching and learning. Their curriculum didn't work, or at least not as well as it should, and one of the main reasons, apparently, is the current "atmosphere" in which said students are learning.

Kinda hard to teach doctors that babies are born knowing they belong on a breast, in a setting where mothers & babies are thwarted at every turn, huh guys? **

So it's not just mothers that need "a breastfeeding supportive environment" in order to learn about breastfeeding. Doctors do, too. Imagine that...

[**P.S. that’s a reference to this line in their hospital policy: “The alert, healthy newborn is capable of latching onto a breast without specific assistance within the first hour after birth.”]
