Dear Lactnetters,
As I move along building and creating my new business, I encounter ups and
downs. On one hand, I get this fear "Oh my...what have I done!!??"
And on the other hand, I feel a great surge of adrenaline and
self-empowerment.

Today was a bummer. I spoke to a local supplier of nursing bras. He sells
three bras. Two for nursing and another for stopping the milk from coming
in! Like binding.

Among other things, this man maintains that babies
cannot contract meningitis from bad formula batches or packaging and that
all that propoganda is false and generated by La Leche League militants.

I commented on why if he maufactures nursing bras he doesn't also try to
educate mothers. He really shot that one down.
Called my correct information policy "philosophy".

A different supplier REFUSED to sell me bras. I said to him, "Look, I
don't have to defend my business against you. Obviously your business is
still small for a reason." And I hung up.

For one, I feel that if we are selling products to breastfeeding mothers,
we should include pro-breastfeeding commentary with our products. For
instance, when a woman buys one of our dresses through direct mail, we want
to have printed on the box, the Ten Steps to successful Bf. On the tags we
place on the clothing, we want to have reminders for building a good milk
supply, ie:
"Mom, Breastfeeding is one of the most important
commitments a mother makes.

Your baby needs to nurse
between 10-12 times a day in the first few weeks.

 If baby has two
bowel movements and 4-6 wet diapers a day, he is getting enough!

Please,
look after yourself.

Eat a diet rich of protein, fruits and vegetables.

Get as much rest as possible in the upcoming weeks.

Fresh air and sunlight help counter the baby blues.

Tell yourself everyday that you are important and the best mother for your
baby!

These small things will help you respond happily to your baby's needs."

We may even vary the tags by asking the mothers how old their babies are
before we send out the order.

This may not be the exact copy, but we definitely want something similar.

Anyone have any ideas? We want to educate through our sales.

I have a strong feeling that this is the key to cornering our competition.
Both Yael and I took a course this year to become Lactation Consultants,
and eventually we both hope to sit for the IBCLE. I know mothers out there
want correct and positive messages about mothering, their bodies, and
themselves. That is what Mother's Choice (AND LACTNET) is about.
