Hi Barbara,
I'm wondering if in your upcoming lecture on "anatomical variations" if you
will be addressing variations with the baby. Specifically, I have seen a
couple of Asian babies with very small mouths and wondered if this is noted
as an issue relative to breastfeeding with this population in particular and
if so what, if anything, is done to address it. The baby that I saw most
recently had an open mouth no wider (comfortably) than 1.5inx 1in and had
developed a strong aversion to the breast by my visit at 4 days of age. She
obviously could not latch deeply enough. The baby was very average sized,
about 7 lbs. and as an interesting aside Mom is a local tv personality who
couldn't believe that this was the root of the latch problem and she told me
that when she shared our discussion with her pedi, he laughed and didn't
believe it either.
