Anne has listed a number of good ways to help clinics abandon the practice
of giving out formula gifts. Another potential approach is one that Ban the
Bags has used which involves the concept of risk management. Many of the
hospitals we worked with could care less about the breastfeeding outcomes
of their patients. What got their attention was the potential liability of
giving out formula samples. Hospitals (and clinics) do not engage in stock
control so have no way of identifying patients who were given a gift that
has been recalled. There is no oversight on monitoring the dates on the
cans, or assuring that mothers know how to prepare the product to avoid
potential contamination. The Risk Management Department may be a good place
to start in your efforts to get rid of the formula gifts.
