I take my shoes off at the door too, as long as the floors look 
reasonably clean and not splintery! It's a sign of respect in many 
cultures, and good ecologically (EPA says it greatly reduces the risk of 
bringing in environmental chemicals if one removes shoes at the door). 
That baby we are visiting is going to be crawling around those floors in 
a few months.
