Hi Lea:

I must have posted the reference on Lactnet many times.  Here is the original reference.  

"Available evidence suggests this relationship is not strong enough to allow soiled or wet diaper counts alone to be used as a screening tool.”  Nommsen-Rivers, Laurie, Aug. 15-19, 2007.  Using diaper counts to assess breastfeeding frequency.  In: Controversies in Lactation.  International Lactation Consultant Association Conference, San Diego, CA. 

She has also published this in a peer-reviewed journal as well and I think you can easily find this on lactnet or pubmed.

She used receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves to analyze the positive and negative predictive values.  Beautiful statistics.
