Just to rectify the information on the Rochester lactation scene. Being at
Strong Memorial myself, I dropped in on Ruth Lawrence to talk about the
young woman with breastfeeding difficulties who is planning to move here.
Ruth does not run a breastfeeding clinic. We have several
breastfeeding-friendly services at Strong, all of which she has an important
role in. Linda Friedman is a doctor, but not an MD doctor. She is a PhD
who administers Ruth's phenomenal breastfeeding literature collection and
has a help-line for health professionals who have breastfeeding questions.
My understanding is that if lay persons (i.e. non-lactation related
professionals) call in, they also will answer their questions. There are
rumors of a breastfeeding clinic in the making in the outpatient department
at both Strong and Rochester General, but nothing actually running yet (to
my understanding - I will continue to pursue).
So where to get help in Rochester? If there's anyplace to get
breastfeeding help, this has got to be it. Both major hospitals that train
pediatricians (they are actually under a single administration) have
prominent and experienced breastfeeding advocates - Ruth at Strong and Cindy
Howard at Rochester General. Hence, both hospitals are extremely
breastfeeding friendly- both inpatient and outpatient- and the residents who
train here are among the better informed. Consequently, to find a
breastfeeding-friendly pediatrician is not too hard. I would choose a
pediatrician who has also either breastfed herself ( my preference) or one
whose spouse did. I can make recommendations if necessary.
If there is an actual problem (eg. if she needs more intervention) I
would use one of the lactation consultants here. I hear we have some
excellent ones. The one I know is affiliated with RGH and does not have a
private practice. I will get in touch with her for referrals to community
LC's and to encourage her to get on the net.
Hope this is of some help. Sorry it took me so long to respond to
your inquiry, Kathleen, but I wanted to check my facts.
Best of luck Giosi Di Meglio, MD
