Hey ya'll from North Carolina,
I have been a *lurker* for about a month now, and thank you all for some
very good information! My name is Dottie Horton, and I am a relatively new
IBCLC. I passed last July's exam. I learned the art of bfing from Mary
Tully of the Triangle Mother's Milk Bank in Raleigh, N.C. She was a
wonderful mentor to me for six years. NMR is a N.P.O. that offers bfing
education and support to any woman interested in bfing. I relocated to
Wilmington, N.C. last year and began my search for a position as a LC,
only to find that this area is not yet *enlightened* re the many benefits
we offer. I am now working as an RN in a level III NICU. I am also the
mother of three beautiful children, R.J. (8yo ABM), Courtney (5yo bfed),
and Bethany (3yo bfed), and can give specific, first-hand examples of the
benefits of bfing vs the problems with ABM.

Jonathan,
If you are still looking for the Kaiser Permanente study, it was done by
Christine Hoey in Raleigh, N.C. (not Durham). I thought I had a copy, but
can't lay my hands on it at the moment. IMHO Christine did a wonderful
job of combing through charts to prove that bfed babies had fewer sick
visits, and yes she did do a cost analysis. If you are still interested,
I'm sure I can get you the info.

I am currently putting together a proposal to encourage our hospital to
hire *at least* one full time LC. Does anyone have any inventive ideas on
how to fund a position? The hospital wants to know how much of my own
salary I could generate. I have looked into pump rentals and sales, and
I'm slowly finding some info on 3rd party reimbursement. Any help would
be appreciated!
