Just a quick note to my Canadian colleagues, fluconazole suspension is
available and has received the indication for the treatment of
oral-pharyngeal candidiasis in children.

As has been previously described on Lactnet, the safety profile has been
established in infants to one day of age but the efficacy of this indication
has only been demonstrated from the age of 6 months on.

The dosage is 3 mg/day in a once per day dose and it is supplied in 10 or 40
mg/ml and it is an orange flavoured suspension. The pharmacies in our area
carry the 10 mg preparation. The official recommendation is to treat for
two weeks but I have found seven to ten days to be just as effective. The
cost is about $ 40.00 Can.

Further information is in the 1996 CPS (Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and
Specialties).

I use this only as a back up drug when oral nystatin is not effective.

Regards,

Shirley Gross
