Hi.  We're new to lactnet just this week.  I'm Cathy Lester, Breastfeeding
Coordinator for the local WIC project & mom of James-7 and Ann Claire-15
months & nursing.  I'm also a nurse and ICCE.  Donna Logan, to my left, is a
dietetic intern at Texas A&M University after working 5 years in
Maternal/Child Nutrition for TX Agricultural Extension Service & mom of
Jeromy-7, Patrick-5, and Alex-7 months and nursing.  We want to respond to
the "how to broach breastfeeding" questions.  At WIC, I used to say "What
have you heard..." vs. "What do you know..."--it can be threatening if moms
think they "know" something that is erroneous information.  If you just
"heard" it, you don't have the same ownership of the idea.  Then Donna
pointed out that a great prenatal question is "How long do you plan to
breastfeed this baby?"  This establishes that breastfeeding is the norm and
the expectation, and puts mom in the position of choosing NOT to breastfeed,
rather than having to choose TO breastfeed.  Since using this at WIC, I've
had lots more moms open to exploring their concerns and misconceptions about
nursing.
