The idea that a baby needs a specially furnished and decorated habitat that
is different from where her mother lives, is, er, umm, *interesting*.
Smacks of zoos to me. I am SO glad I did not let my lack of five thousand
smackeroos for furniture and interior design deter me from having a child
more than a quarter of a century ago today. Silly me, I thought the baby
could enjoy the same decor we did, as I assumed the baby would be sharing
the family space, not living in a specially made enclosure of its very very
own.
I wonder how much more relaxing our room would have been if I'd been trying
to figure out where to PUT the complete line of Lansinoh breastfeeding
products and pumps, amidst the crib, changing table, dresser, armoire,
glider and the other *necessities* - one hardly dares ask what these might
be! - covered by the gift certificate from a leading baby goods retailer.
Ok, so I am a bit ornery today. Chalk it up to it being my daughter's
birthday and I won't get to see her for another two weeks. Hope her room is
decorated with a theme that will last for years. Mine was called 'random
clutter' and it has really stood the test of time, lasting until years after
the babies all moved out permanently.
