I was so blessed this morning to be in a mother's room when she asked her
baby's ped about which formula to use after weaning. She mentioned the new
formulas, and he replied with a statement about good marketing techniques--
that this is just one more thing that's found in breastmilk, and now
they've added it to formula. He told her which of the companies had
performed research, and how the other company added the nutrients in order
to maintain their market share. He also talked about the levels in
breastmilk, and explained that breastfed babies can produce their own
DHA/ARA in addition to what the mother provides. He also told her that
although the competition makes claims about eyesight and brain development,
that the comparison was not made against breastfed babies, but formula fed
babies. Therefore, we don't know if the benefits are comparable to a
breastfed baby. (this has probably been said on Lactnet before, but I had
obviously missed it). He left the choice up to her regarding which formula
to chose. After he left, I talked with her about pumping after she returns
to work, and she was ready to receive the information.

This was so refreshing to me--especially since the ped had two new
residents with him. I quickly took advantage of the moment and gave them
each a Best Start health care providers' breastfeeding support kit. The
ped was excited to receive it, and muttered something about being tired of
the marketing tactics.
