Dear Friends:

At Booth Maternity Center, a birthing hospital run by women for women,
pregnant women got their own charts, recorded their own weights, tested
their own urine, and spent time waiting to be seen by the midwife reading
their own charts. This was the best care I have ever seen; Susan Burger has
given us 3 wonderful examples of that also.

I want to know what is going on with me, I can attend to the details of my
own care; all pregnant women would be like that if given the opportunity and
the education. We in healthcare can not talk about empowering women until we
trust them.

As for poop, I have a question of Susan....in my classes to healthcare
professionals, I hand out the Diaper Diary; this teaching tool includes a
color set of photographs of the changing colors of newborn poop, black to
green to yellow. I suggest to the participants that just as store-bought
turkeys come with a pop-out gauge to tell when they are done, that newborns
come with a poop-out gauge indicating that lactation is proceeding on
course. If a baby is not pooping yellow by day 5 (day 7 at the absolute
latest), then that dyad needs to be seen and evaluated asap! The color
change is a guide.

What say you to this?

Disclaimer: While I was briefly involved in the publication of the first
sets of the Diaper Diary, I am no longer. This teaching tool, offered in
English, French, and Spanish, is the brainchild of Barbara Wilson-Clay and
Kay Hoover. I spend a couple of hundred dollars every few years, buying them
to give away in my classes.

warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
