How awful! I hope the parents are the forgiving sort :-)

I had a scare with my first baby 8 years ago when an LC came to my house and
taught me to finger feed with the tube along the side of my finger and taped
in place with one piece of tape running alongside my finger (i.e., the tube is
centered under the piece of tape), but then two support pieces of tape going
around my finger like a ring, one just above my first digit and the other
somewhere nearer to my hand. I remember fingerfeeding and noticing that the lower
(i.e., closer to the tip of the finger) piece of tape was gone, but I thought
maybe I had been too tired to put it on. Hours later, I was changing my son
on the changing table and I noticed he was gagging on something, which turned
out to be the piece of tape. I was lucky, but will never forget the stab of
fear in me as I realized what was lodged in his throat.

I rarely recommend finger-feeding with my clients, but when I do, I use only
the long piece of tape that coincides with the actual tube. I make sure the
tape extends all the way up to the "V" of the finger, i.e., the junction of
the finger and the neighboring finger. It's pretty tough for a new mom to
finger-feed without anything anchoring the tube in place, but I suppose she could
try.
