I have a copy of an article from the Birmingham News (Alabama) from Sept 23,1995
about an infant who had a heart transplant and developed chylothorax, in which
long chain triglycerides began building up in the blood stream. Taken off
breast milk and started on formula, the baby did not do well, so his mother
consulted Barber Dairies in Birmingham and asked them about making her breast
milk into skim breast milk. The laboratory analyst told her about centrifuging
the milk to siphon the fat off the top. With the combined efforts of the
hospital lab, the physicians, dietitians and laboratory distributor of
centrifuge tubes, the mom was able to spin about 26 ounces of milk each day.
The baby was doing very well on the skim milk, has gained weight, developed
better kidney function and began absorbing proteins better. The doctor, James
Kirklin, who was the baby's heart surgeon gave his full approval. Rosemary
Yancy was the chief dietitian, who figured out how much medium chain
triglycerides to add back to the milk so the baby would have enough fat.

Perhaps this will help the person who posted about chylothorax. I knew I had
the article somewhere!
