When I see definite one-sided soreness with flattened nipple, I suspect
some tightness in neck or other part of the body that is causing discomfort
for baby to feed on one side, while the other side is fine. These babies
tend to prefer turning their heads one direction more than the other.

A temporary solution can be sliding baby across to feed on sore breast as
if she were feeding from the other side, with legs out from mom's body. If
the problem isn't resolved soon, I would recommend some body work--either
by a chiropractor or OT, both of whom are experienced in working with
infants. And, of course, a cranio/sacral practitioner would be good. But
in some areas they aren't as easily found.

When moms have had such work done, the tension is relieved and baby is
comfortable feeding in any position.
