Ann posted about people finding her tri-fold display with the Ad Council's
ice cream poster offensive. Ridiculous, of course, but I made a display
HOPING to get comments and got NONE. I used The ILCA Toolkit poster idea of
"What Does a Breastfeeding-Friendly Community Look Like? YOU!" with a
mirror at eye level. I made a photo collage all around it with pictures of
staff, MDs, Peer Counselors, our local BF Alliance, and I added in a picture
of the Mariana (?) doll with breastfeeding baby, billboards with
breastfeeding pictures and slogans from our state capitol, pictures of our
state's 2 Baby Friendly Hospitals with a slogan about choosing a Baby
Friendly facility, and the poster from the Massachusetts BF Coalition's Ban
the Bags campaign urging hospitals to promote health, not products. Not one
comment. I also had some small pictures of the Ad Council posters. Maybe
people were more interested in looking at themselves, and not the subtle
political messages mixed in the display.

I had a game entitled "Turn 'Em In". Staff were to find examples of Code
violations, examples of things that encourage breastfeeding, and/or turn in
their coworkers for doing something that was breastfeeding-friendly. I had
2 boxes of prizes. Guess how many people played the game? 3 from OB and
one from ICU who is currently breastfeeding. Very sad. I also printed
waiting room signs and put them in page protectors and laminated dozens of
breastfeeding friendly posters for offices. Not one taker. Very
disappointing. For our annual celebration we had speakers, a Baby Weigh
Station, great food, door prizes (including 2 Purely Yours). Guess how many
staff showed up? None. We had almost 50 people from the community.

Anyone have ideas for how to get more hospital staff to attend? Maybe offer
CEU's? Better door prizes? Next year I'll call the offices directly to
offer give aways and mail them out.
