Hi, All,
I just came across this research lit review, entitled "Fluconazole in
Neonatal Candida Infections", see full text at
http://pediatrics.medscape.com/SCP/IIM/1999/v16.n03/m5967.estr/m5967.estr.html

I thought it would be useful reading for many of you, since it discusses
the safety of using fluconazole (Diflucan) to treat Very Low Birthweight
neonates for systemic yeast infections. The article indicates that
fluconazole may be just as safe and effective as the standard therapy of
Amphotericin B, but with fewer side effects, for these babies.

Perhaps if physicians become more comfortable and familiar with treating
young and small babies safely with Diflucan, they will be less likely to be
concerned with the effects of the small amount of fluconazole that enters
the breastmilk when the mother takes Diflucan to treat breast/nipple yeast,
and they will be more accomidating when we review the rationale for using a
longer than one dose course of Diflucan to treat severe yeast in the mom.

One can hope.
Email me if you don't have web access but want me to email you the text.
