Coincidentally I just made a home visit on this issue. My client was induced
at 38 weeks because of SGA and baby was born healthy at 2k. She breastfed
from the beginning and baby thrived. Now at 5.5 months there are concerns
about her weight although she is well developed, alert, sleeps 6 hours at
night but makes up for it during the day, has appropriate pees and poos etc.
Mother feels that she has less milk and is not able to pump much.
The mother started taking the mini-pill a month ago so that seems to tie in
with the problem.
I took her a list of galactagogues and suggested that she continue to pump
in addition to flowing with the baby`s needs.
At 5.5 months I also thought that she could start gradually on solid foods
and suggested that she give small amounts of some of the high-calorie
vegetables.
Although she has been breastfeeding with great dedication all these months,
I did notice that she was sitting a bit awkwardly when feeding so we did
some adjustment in positioning and the baby seemed better attached. She was
also comfortable in the lying-down position but was worried that the baby
would not get enough milk that way so we worked on that too and the baby
seemed to attach better.
Often the issues of weight or reduced supply can be discussed on the
telephone, but a home visit even after all this time can be very useful for
making sure positioning is correct and comfortable.

I still don`t like the mini-pill!
May you all have a wonderful spring holiday, Easter and Passover.
