On the topic of hereditary links with tongue-tie, yesterday I saw a 4 day
old born at 6.1oz now down to 5.4oz with a severe tongue-tie. Very limited
range of motion, and much increased work of feeding. Dad was tongue-tied,
clipped as a baby and re-clipped further back as a 4th grader due to speech
impediment. Mother was tongue-tied, but fell and clipped own frenulum on
lower teeth as a toddler. Older sibling of the baby was tongue-tied. The
ENT who put ear tubes into him as a 3 yr. old clipped his frenulum while he
was at it. I often see tongue-tied babies whose parents reveal that others
in the family share this trait. That is typically the first comment I hear
when I identify the condition, "Oh, I had that as a child," or "Oh, so and
so in our family has that."

I've been taking lots of photos of these babies, and of older people with
tongue-ties and gaps between teeth due to labial frenums attached to the gum
line. It's really fascinating.
