I've been reading the posts about comparing tummy sleeping to car seat
safety and had to add my 2 cents. While the risks may be different, the
concept is the same. We know the studies tell us it's safer to "back sleep"
/ use a car seat but yet a parent decides that the risks are not as
important as letting their child sleep on their tummies/ nursing (or
holding)their baby on a long trip because they're screaming. It's simply a
case of deciding we know better than the safety experts.

I've never taken my child out of a carseat but I did let my son sleep on his
stomach ONCE. The guilt all night and the stress that if something happened
it would be my fault made me never do it again. And yes I rationalized that
he was breastfed, in my bed on a hard mattress, etc. but the bottom line is
I wanted him to sleep for more than a half an hour. Not because he should
sleep longer but because I needed to sleep longer. As many of you have
pointed out, extended sleeping is not the norm or "better" for babies,
waking up frequently to nurse is.
