Kim Connor, Regarding your call for help about Depo and BF-Yes it can be
used, usually without decreasing milk supply. In fact I have seen an
increase, I think. There was some talk about this on the Net recently and
an antecdote to the contrary, but There usually is not a problem. Depo is
Progesterone only as is the Mini-pill. I heard Dr. Andrew Kaunitz, a
porfessor in OB and GYn from U of Florida, at our Health Department, a year
or two ago. He has been following the use of Depo all over the world (10+
years) and said it can even be started right after delivery with no problem.
There is research out there and anyone who needs it can get it from him. I
have his address. The insert with the drug used to say start at six weeks
but he said it was not necessary. I think that there is more bleeding when
it is started right away. Our Prenatal Clinic at the Health Department
starts it at the 6 week check.

For awhile, at one of the hospitals in Lansing Mich. it was being given
before women were discharged, but Medicaid would not pay for it. What sencs
does that make? One of the clinics gives it on day 5, (I do not know the
rationale) but it is no easy task for our women without much support and
often without transportation to get back to the clinic for the shot. Hopoe
this helps. Cindy
