Hi all,
I haven't posted in a while but I thought I'd share this one and get a little
extra help.
I got a call from the mother of a 4 week old baby who had been told to
temporarily wean because her baby's digestive system was not mature enough to
digest her breast milk.
The baby had had bloating, pain, cramping and explosive liquid poops since
day one. The doctor puts the her on a "hypoallergenic" formula and voila, the
symptoms disappear and this mom has a happy baby. How's that for undermining
a woman's trust in her body?
All this did not add up to me so I asked about diet, medications, etc. Diet
had been ruled out but this mom is taking rather large amounts of metamucil a
day. I had her read me the cautions on the label and it's bloating, gas,
diarrhea-everything her baby is experiencing! It was really a no-brainer
figuring out what was causing the baby's discomfort. You know, when you hear
hoofbeats think horses not zebras.
I've seen other psyllium products caution nursing mothers but apparently this
one doesn't. I'm sure used occasionally in moderate amounts most people have
no problem but this woman is dependent on this laxative. She can't go off
cold turkey.
I suggested she try decreasing the amount she is taking and address her own
diet. I also found a laxative in Hale's book she might try.
Any other suggestions? Specific products? Herbal preparations? I'd
particularly like a response from Jack. Her doctor is already balking at my
suggestions and your MD might help, Jack. My "DC" further convinces this
doctor that my common sense is quackery.
Thanks a lot!
