Having just returned from spending two days in hospital with my asthmatic,
breastfeeding, co-sleeping, sling carried(until just recently) two year old,
I would like to remind people that on an individual level, breastfeeding is
decidedly *not* magic.
The benefits we see on a population level may or may not apply to any one
particular child or dyad.

An interesting observation:during this bout of breathing difficulties,
breastfeeding was actually *more*difficult for my son than drinking from a
cup. The required jaw movements and tongue extension merely triggered more
coughing till vomiting episodes, and the poor baby was unable to stay latched
long enough to trigger a let-down. A younger baby or a mom with a faster MER
may have been able to overcome this difficulty.
