Dear Lactnet Friends:

One of our lactosauri reginae ask about increasing fat content in EBM. This
is called lactoengineering. There are several ways.

As fat in milk increases with a circadian rhythm, using milk collected in
the afternoon and evening will have higher fat content than the morning.

Letting the milk sit, skimming off the cream and adding it to another
bottle of milk is another way.

Pumping through the first let-down, taking that milk away to be stored, and
then continuing to pump and feeding baby the milk from the last half of
pumping will give the baby milk with higher fat content...as fat content
rises during a pumping.

Massaging the breast during pumping physically dislodges fat globules from
the walls of the ducts as another way to increase fat content. Either use a
hands-free bra or pump one breast so a hand is free to massage during
pumping.

Storing the first pump of the day for later use, and giving baby milk from
all the other pumping is another way, as fat content rises during the day.

Combing hand techniques with pumping yields more milk and also boosts fat
