Dear Anh,
As a listmother I will refrain from objecting to this presentation of a
personal case. I have no problems with it, because at times subscribers
really have no other place to use as a sounding board for things and in my
estimation this is one such time.

'Breast as pacifier' sounds to me like an ignorant remark from someone who
thinks women's breasts were invented to give the rubber industry a break.

The baby was already, before birth, showing signs of a changing growth
trajectory. There was neither breast nor pacifier involved. We induce
labor or just remove babies when we fear the consequences of leaving them in
their mothers, and many times we don't know, really, whether it is
necessary. We do know that we are unable to do anything much about
slower-growing fetuses except detect (some of) them. We like to think we
can do something about slower-growing babies, and we have many theories on
how to do it, but little proof of their value and purpose.

All through reading your post I kept getting the feeling that this baby
NEEDS the breast more than she needs anything else. It sounds like madness
to me, to withhold it from her. Given the family context, withholding the
breast would likely be even more traumatic than in a family where
separateness and early weaning from physical contact are valued.

When I got to the end, it made me cry. Keep breastfeeding your baby; you
know her and care more for her than any of the other professionals involved.

Try not to lose trust in yourself - for your child's sake.
warmly
