Jeannette,
You may want to look at the labial frenulum, the membrane that attaches
the upper lip to the gum. My 5th child clamped down really hard, tugged at
the breast, etc. During some dental surgery it was discovered that he had
a tight, thick labial frenulum which had caused liquids and foods to
collect, causing the dental problems (he was 17 months old). Anyway, a
frenulectomy was done, and nursing has been so gentle since then. It seems
he could not get a good seal before, thus the clamping and biting. This
could certainly be inherited.
Please let me know what happens.
