I have never liked the expression "correct" latch eny more than
"good" or "bad" latch. I have seen some attachments that almost
make me cringe and yet baby is thriving and mom is toatlly
comfortable! I prefer to refer to latches in terms of
effectiveness. When either baby is not transferring enough milk or
mom is getting sore, then the latch is "ineffective" or "less
effective". This takes away the element of "right" or "wrong" which
moms are getting enough of anyway!
For each mom/baby pair, there is a different "window of
effectiveness". While, as mentioned above, for some, it is working
just fine even when the latch looks terrible to us. On the other
hand, for some, changing the latch just a "silly millimeter" can
make a world of difference to mom and baby.
When I see a mom with a wierd, but working latch and I may not see
her again, I might say something like, "That seems to be working
well for you. Some moms and babies do better
with.....................(whatever would make it look like a
"better" latch). As long as what you're doing is eorking for you,
don't change it, but if you develop any soreness or baby doesn't
seem satisfied, you might want to try............" I find this is
well received, especially with experienced multips. With a primip,
especially if she seems overwhelmed with all the info she's getting,
I would be more likely to check with her in a day or so or encourage
her to call me if she has concerns.
