Another factor for how severe the case is depends on proximity to the person
you catch it from - school mate or sibling.  Sibs seem to get a heavier dose
than the more casual contact at school.  Interesting disease,  baby gets
some immunity transplacentally if mom has had varicella and some immunity
via breastmik. Varicella is not thought to be tranferred via breastmilk.
As I said before it is most dangerous if mom gets varicella with in 5 days
before delivery or 3 days after.  Lawrence has a good section on varicella
