The person who said that bf after implant surgery is impossible was
misinformed. Whether the mom will be able to fully nourish her infant or not
is another matter, but it does not hurt to try. The infant should be
monitored for wet & poopy diapers as any other newborn.
Potential problems: incision may have damaged sensory nerves, impairing MER
or damaged milk sinuses, impairing drainage; capsular contracture and other
foreign body reactions may have damaged breast tissue; some moms have
implants to cosmetically 'repair' breast hypoplasia, if this was the case she
should be examined carefully for glandular tissue development; engorgement
should be avoided as it can be excrutiating for moms with implants, as the
breast tissue is already compressed by the implant. THere are also issues
about the effect of silicone leakage into the milk and autoimmune disease in
the infant, though these reports are preliminary and the benefits of
breastfeeding well documented. If the mom has difficulty with milk supply,
she can use a supplemental feeding device and still nuture her baby at the
breast. Danger signs to look for : extremely sore nipples could indicate very
low milk supply; engorgement or plugged ducts could indicate insufficient
drainage. If there are any specifics, please let us know.
