hi kathleen
I teach very informally and just talk. No slides or overheads. I give a few
handouts out. I basically cover what is on my main bf handout that I
developed. Let me know if you want a copy. I basically do something similar
to the last poster. I do not cover anatomy etc. I talk about the first days
of life and from a hospitalized birth perspective, becoz that is what my
population experiences. So I am trying to get them to just do the basics --
no or minimal mother/baby separation, bf within the first hour, STS, rooming
in, exclusive bf. We talk about some common concerns: what about diet, what
about meds, can I take my pain medicine? We talk about our particular
followup program, resources that are available. In my last class (classes
are small), we used baby dolls. I gave them a doll and asked how they would
bf. They all held the baby sort of bottle cradle. We talked about starting
the baby in the middle, skin to skin, and then just sliding the baby into
place, keeping all surfaces touching. It was fun and I think helpful. Then
we watched Follow Me Mum. Questions come up anytime. it is very informal. I
very briefly talk about going back to work, becoz most moms do and they
always ask. I give written info on that and on milk storage and I talk a
little about having a good pump or method of expression for return to work.
I really do not spend much time on this becoz many moms will wean before the
6 wk point. But most want some info so we touch on that and I let them know
who can help them when time gets closer for that milestone. We talk about
the hsopital routines and how to best work around them to keep mother and
baby together. Hope this is somewhat helpful.
