Subject: [LACTNET] Nifedipine/nipple healing

**Hello Kathy,

I had always heard that the damage seems to
precipitate the vasopsams, but now I am begining to wonder whether there
are instances where the reverse is true, ie poor circulation to the nipples
is a
contributing factor to the damage or its inability to heal.

**That *must* be true, not only in certain instances, but in general. Isn't
that why we put so much emphasis on a good latch, because if the baby only
takes the nipple and 'nibbles', circulation is obstructed and therefore
cracks will appear...? I don't think the cracks cause the spasms (although
the pain may reduce oxy levels and thus does not facilitate vasodilation);
severed circulation is ground for cracks.
As for nifedipine: so far I haven't worked with a mom who started to use it,
but I know from collegues that impressive improvement can be gained by the
medication, provided the diagnosis is right: Raynaud/spasms, and not just a
bad latch that noone recognizes... ;o)

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen, Netherlands
