Wow, I just want to thank you all for so many replies and so much
discussion on this topic since I posted my original question. Having read
it all I shall continue with what I have always done , which is at the end
of my breastfeeding class (within a course of pre natal classes) spend
about half hour discussing breastfeeding & working - almost all my moms
return to work between 6-8 weeks. I teach hand expression, recommend that
they always try that first & only get a pump if they really need it. I do
show them different types of pumps & explain pros & cons. I am still
saddened to see pumps being pushed in the hospitals- one comment made by a
clinic receptionist about a nursing sister who runs ante-natal classes was
" well, she has so many pumps you can't blame her for pushing them can you"
This is the kind of attitude that disturbs me , not the use of pumps per
se! It seems that as the distribution of formula is coming under control,
we are becoming a pump culture. There always has to be a commercial item
directed at the mother.
One question I would like to ask. The use of pumps seems to be much more
commonplace in USA & many have mentioned the mothers difficulty at touching
her own body. If mothers have this problem, how do they handle the degree
of sexual arousal that can occur with breastfeeding? Is it distasteful to
them? Is it a reason for pumping & bottlefeeding.
If anyone does reply can you send to my email add. as I have to go no
mail for the next 4 weeks. I am off to UK for my 2nd. Christmas at home in
18 years. Looking forward to the cold weather.
I shall miss the lactnet which with my cup of coffee has been getting my
brain ticking over in the morning for the last few weeks.
Happy Christmas to all who celebrate & Happy New Year.
Christine
